Quotation- “As a global public platform-accessible to anyone with a cell phone-twitter offers users across the political spectrum opportunities to raise awareness or presusring issues;turns the spotlight on social protest;and challenge the narratives presented by major media outlets.”(40) Social Stories

Comment-This quote is a valid description of the ways people use social media, for example people on twitter use hashtags to spread awareness about current issues/events. In recent years the Black Lives Matter movement has been huge due to it spreading on social media, people use a hashtag relating to that movement and that causes other people to see it and then that hashtag helps spread awareness about it. Twitter can be seen as two different things for a variety of people. Some people may use it to post gifs or memes but others use it to spread awareness and help support something they believe for. The great thing about social media is that it is a major reason for movements being spread as said in the quote above “it turns the spotlight on protest”. Later in the article the story shifts to having social media “build” someone’s life since they make a profile and shape ot to what they believe in, like tweeting about a movement or tweeting something like #BlackLivesMatter social media is the key to shaping up these movements and without social media people would not be able to spread these hashtags or movements that quickly. One negative thing that could happen is that all these hashtags could spark some sort of argument about a topic or someone’s opinion. Hate can be spread through social media but I think that the hate sort of gets blocked out by all the positivity and all the hashtags about spreading awareness being so common in social media.

Question-Do you think that the positivity in social media outways some of the negativity that is shown in social media platforms?
