Walking While Black Response

Walking While Black Response

  1. Cadogan has different struggles and challenges in each of the 3 places he has lived in. The first one Kingston he knows the streets very well and knows how to stay out of trouble, but if he wears something like the wrong color in a certain area it will cost him his life. In New Orleans at first he thinks it’s not so bad but then he realizes everyone is looking at him and thinking that he is the crime. He learns to wear college clothing and always carry around his college ID for his safety. In New York City if he is running somewhere to catch a train the police may stop him because they think he could have stabbed someone and is running away from the scene, he learned to always walk with a white man for his own safety. We learn that Kingston is “meant” for black people to live and that New Orleans and New York City was not a safe place for black people to live there in the past.
  2. In ways I follow the same “rules” as Cadogan does while walking alone, if it is dark out while Im walking Ill always make sure to look around and be aware of my surroundings. If I could have people with my while walking g like Cadogan I would always try and have someone with me while walking.
  3. Me and my friend were in Boston walking at night and we turned down this sketchy alley and about halfway through we noticed that it was very creepy and people were just standing there not talking. So we picked up the pace a little but an hurried through the alley and made sure we didn’t split up and stuck together.
  4. Cadogan’s narrative informs about racism through his whole life. He shows how he encounters racism in all 3 cities he has lived in, he gives a set of rules for each place he is in so he can stay safe. Like in New Orleans he wears all college merchandise and always carries ID so he can be more safe. The first person narrative connects in a more larger way since we are getting real life examples through the person that went through them, we get to hear there voice and there perspective on the story. I think the first person narrative is more clear to read since it is coming directly from the person that went through these examples.
