Bloom Reading Response

Bloom Reading Response

  1. Overall this article was a lot about how empathy can be a different thing in peoples minds. The first topic the author talks about is how empathy can be easier to come across if you are really close to the person you are getting empathy from the author even says “its far easier to empathize with those who are close to us”. The author also says that for some people a white person talking to a white person about empathy may be easier than a white person talking to a black person. Another topic about empathy is that the popularity of something can affect how much empathy they will receive. An example that the authors states is that “the murder off 20 children and six adults at sandy hook gained so much popularity”, he than says that the same thing happens more frequently in Chicago but because it is not spread across the world and not as popular so they don’t receive empathy. The last topic the author talks about is to try and make the reader try and empathize with people you dont relate to so that more people can feel that sense of empathy. The author says “Now at the same time do this with someone else who’s in a difficult situation, with different feelings and experiences”. The other than says to do it to 1 person than 5 people and just keep on spreading that empathy to people you dont relate to.
  2. I totally agree with blooms arguments, I think I agree with the one about popularity affecting empathy the most. I agree with that the most because an example that proves that even more is if a celebrity was going through hard times he/she would have all that popularity and people would most likely give empathy towards the celebrity.
  3. At first bloom challenges my understanding on empathy by saying that you only give true empathy to people you relate to, but now I totally agree with him because it does make sense. You will only give good advice and empathy to people you trust and can relate to.
  4. “actually, in the year of the sandy hook killings, more schoolchildren were.murdered in one American city Chicago”, this claim that the author makes is about popularity and how it affects empathy. I totally support this claim because it is very true the event with more popularity even though it may be not as bad as other events it will still get more empathy since it is more popular.
