DFW Reading Response

DFW Reading Response

  1. This speech was about how your life has value and what you can do to make your life have value. One Main argument he had was talking about how your degree has human value, he talked about how every choice you make can affect your life value. He also talks about an example with believing in god and not and saying the same experience can have 2 different meanings for different people, he states that an atheist does not exist it is just the person that has a choice and thinks that is what they are since they had a different experience than the other person. He also says to be less arrogant because you never know what people are going through, like some guy driving fast could be driving his kid to the hospital and not just being reckless for now reason. The last point he talks about top end the speech is that you decide what has meaning to you and what doesn’t. An example he gave was that of you pay attention to something that is important it will have a valuable effect on your life but if you start to zone out or get lost in your own head then you will have a negative impact on your life because of that choice you made.
  2. I agree with DFW’s arguments, I agree with them because in my opinion they have all happened to me. When he talks about having a choice of what to think about I have done other things then study for a test or do homework and that had a negative impact on my life because of the choice I made. I also agree with what he said about think of how other peoples lives are going because everyone never truly knows what is going on, someone could look good on the outside and be suffering on the inside.
  3. In arguments like thinking about other people he is kinda talking about empathy because sometimes feeling/talking to someone about how they they are can really help and relates to his topic. For his other arguments I think it sort of relates to sympathy because he says that you decide what has meaning and what doesn’t so when you sympathize towards someone to is sort of in the middle of something having meaning and not having meaning, since you are just sympathizing to try and make someone feel better even if you totally sent agree with them.
  4. “you decide what has meaning and what doesn’t” I totally support this quote that he says because it is totally true, your brain decides what has meaning, whether that thing that has meaning is a good or bad thing like taking drugs or not studying for a test or a good thing like finishing all your homework or helping someone out that is having a hard time. It is crass to think just one quick thought could possibly change someones life.
